Buxton - Wet Wet Wet
filed in Sites of Interest on May.18, 2009
Buxton is supposedly a ‘Spa’ town, with it’s own mineral springs and exporting a vast quantity of bottled mineral water. You may expect a level of sophisticstion often associated with other Spa’s such as Bath or Leamington, you may be a little disappointed unless you are also familiar with the grimier sides of thse two places. The architecture certainly appears quite grand in the town center and it is quite well located for the surrounding peaks, so is therefore overrun with outdoor supplies stores, though it also benefits from a Waitrose and Marks & Spencers.
Eating Out In Buxton -
Miltons Head even had it’s own ‘restraunt’ area seperate from the bar, and seemed very quiet when we first entered. Though this was apparently just a lull, as very soon the bar filled with a few local characters to give the place a bit of flavour which permeated easily to the restaraunt. The food was sered quickly, but was quite obvosuly microwaved and quite tasteless. An option of chips appeared on my plate as slightly over done fries, and Sasha’s Sheperds Pie was served with some very pale looking vegetables on the side and had enough salt in it to pay a roman legions wages for a week!
Today was slightly better in that we had spotted a ‘Tea Room’ further down the road ‘The Hydro’, though I was somewhat dubious about this, as one of their three veggie options was a ‘Tuna & Pasta Bake’. Though the advertised all-day breakfast was more than satisfacory along with a pot of Organic Earl Grey, served old style with proper leaves and no bags helped reinforce the 1920’s feel of the place. Sasha had one of their ’special hot chocolates’ which was served with about 6 inches of whipped cream and marshmallows on top of it, almost totally disguising the chocolate flake sticking out of it. Service was fantastic even though it was quite busy as people appeared to be sheltering from the torrential rain showers that seem to be passing overhead every 30 minutes today. Our entry did bring the average age of the clientel down by about 10years though!
So to compare the 2 eating experiences in Buxton provides quite a contrast, but I know which I would go back to if given a choice!
Asking for WiFi in Buxton though seems a bit optomistic, perhaps this place isn’t quite ready to be dragged into the 21st century yet
